His nickname “Tito” was given to him by his father when he was just one year old and when he was five the family moved to Santa Ana, California. His mother was previously married before meeting his father. She was married to Louie Simmons and the union had produced three children, all boys.
Growing up was both difficult and traumatic for Ortiz mainly because his parents were not such role models. Both parents were drug addicts and their nonchalance led young Ortiz to the streets where he became involved in gangs, drugs (including cocaine), which earned him some time in juvenile detention. When Ortiz realized he couldn’t depend on his house for his livelihood, resorted to fishing at a local wharf and supporting himself. Ortiz’s parent’s marriage could not survive the pressure and fell apart at the age of thirteen, causing him to move back to Huntington Beach with his mother.
He attended high school at Huntington Beach High School where he began his adventure in the world of amateur wrestling in his sophomore year there. This turned out to be a good move for him as he won the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Championship which qualified him for the state level competition where he finished fourth. As he became more and more engrossed in his “fights”, his mother kicked him out of the house when he was 18 and he teamed up with a former mentor, Paul Herrera, who at the time was the wrestling coach at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California. Ortiz enrolled in Golden West College after Herrera advised him about it and there he continued his push to stardom with a career in wrestling.
