Kevin James wants to make Paul Blart: Mall Cop 3, but he doesn't know the story yet. The King of Queens funnyman left audiences in stitches with the 2009 comedy from Happy Madison Productions, which he co-wrote and starred. James played bumbling mall security guard Paul Blart, who finds himself in the middle of a major heist on the night of Black Friday. The Segway-riding cop proves he's more than people give him credit for by ultimately saving the day. Though it wasn't critically acclaimed, the film fared well at the box office and flaunted James' leading man power, prompting a sequel to be made.
James returned as both an actor and writer for Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 in 2015. The story isn't set in a mall this time around but at a security officers' convention in Las Vegas. Despite critics unsurprisingly trashing the movie, it again brought solid box office numbers and audience feedback. Viewers seem to have fallen in love with Paul Blart as a character, who James created along with co-writer Nick Bakay, and are interested in seeing him on more adventures.
During an exclusive chat with Screen Rant, James opened up about the possibility of a third Segway ride around the sun for Paul Blart. While referencing shooting the film's sequel, he ultimately said he'd love to don the mustache and aviators once again. Check out what he told us below:
"Yeah. Well, we've got to work that one out. I would love that. I don't know what the story is yet. But it was so much fun shooting in Vegas. That was a great time."
James and the crew clearly had a blast filming on location in Vegas. In fact, Paul Blart 2 was actually the first movie to be shot at the luxurious Wynn Las Vegas casino resort. It was also the first film to benefit from Nevada's film tax credit, enacted in 2013. Getting a tax break could play into where a possible third movie is filmed. Even though the first was set in West Orange, NJ, it was filmed in Massachusetts.
With the franchise under the Happy Madison umbrella, Adam Sandler's production company, it's likely that another luxurious location would be chosen should a threequel film happen. Sandler is of the philosophy that a big ingredient of moviemaking magic is bringing your friends to a glamorous location. Though inevitably zany, most of his films end up being fun to watch because viewers can feel how much fun the actors are having onscreen. Paul Blart 3 would probably put the underdog in another new location, which is unfortunate because the real joy of the story was seeing him inside a mall.
