When Lifetime released the Girl in the Closet movie, many wondered whether a film this frightening and disturbing could actually be based on real events. The film follows a young girl named Cameron (Daijah Peters) who gets adopted by her Aunt Mia (Tami Roman) after Cameron's mother suffers from an aneurysm. At first, Cameron enjoys a seemingly good, normal life with Aunt Mia when suddenly she hears strange noises from the basement. When she investigates the basement, she discovers several people chained up, all of whom are later revealed to be victims of Mia's scheme in which she cashes in their benefit checks and takes the money for herself.
When Aunt Mia catches Cameron, she immediately locks her up in the basement with the rest of her victims, and Cameron remains imprisoned there for the next 10 years. Like many of Lifetime's other crime films, Girl in the Closet is incredibly frightening and disturbing not just because it contains shocking elements relating to a child being forcibly chained in a basement, but also because the film's story may have been based on actual real-life events.

Some iconic horror movies were inspired by events that actually happened; it's worth seeing how the true stories change, and how they stay the same. The Girl In The Closet Is Loosely Based On A True Story
Girl in the Closet is loosely based on the true story of Lauren Kavanaugh. When Lauren was little, she was put up for adoption by her mother, Barbara Atkinson. However, after eight months of living with her adopted family, she was forced to move back and live with Barbara due to adoption process complications. However, when Lauren returned to live with her mother, she was locked up in a closet for the next six years of her life, malnourished, and forced to live in filth while facing constant physical and sexual abuse from Barbara and her husband Kenneth (via Decider).
Thankfully, in June 2001, Lauren was rescued by a group of police officers who received a tip of what was happening at the Atkinson house, similar to how Cameron was eventually discovered and rescued by police officers in Girl in the Closet. Another similarity between the real-life event and Girl in the Closet is that both Lauren and Cameron were plucked out of loving, supporting family environments and forced to live with abusers who fundamentally ruined the children's lives. While Barbara did not chain up a bunch of people like Mia did, she did have five other children whom she also abused and neglected.
What Happened To Lauren Kavanaugh?
After being subjected to horrific abuse for years, Lauren eventually got adopted by a couple named Bill and Sabrina Kavanaugh who provided a much more nourishing and healthy family environment for her. Unfortunately, Lauren's troubles did not end after she escaped from the Atkinsons as a relative would later sexually assault her when she was 12 years old. In 2018, the 25-year-old Lauren was arrested for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old, but because she was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial, her case was dismissed. Today, she lives with her adoptive parents in Texas while Barbara and Kenneth Atkinson are serving life sentences.
