Hunters Season 2s Meyer Reveal Makes Ruths Death More Tragic

Hunters season 2 finale's flashbacks to 1977 reveal a twist about Al Pacino's Meyer Offerman, which makes the truth behind Ruth's death worse.

Hunters season 1 started with the murder of Jonah Heidelbaum’s grandmother Ruth, who was killed by the Nazi toy shop owner Heinz Richter after tracking him down in 1977. Throughout Hunters season 1, Jonah took Ruth’s place on Meyer Offerman’s Nazi-hunting team, only to discover that Al Pacino’s “Meyer” was actually the sadistic Nazi doctor Wilhelm Zuchs. Jonah killed Meyer in Hunters’ season 1 finale, but the evil character returned in season 2 for a series of revealing flashbacks set between 1975 and 1977.

Following the reveal that Meyer’s real identity was The Wolf, Hunters season 2’s storyline for Al Pacino’s character tells the origins of his career in hunting his own kind and forming a rag-tag group of Nazi hunters. The flashbacks of Meyer Offerman also come with plenty of unexpected twists about the time leading up to his death, including his role in the death of Holocaust survivor, fellow Nazi hunter, and the real Meyer’s love Ruth Heidelbaum. Hunters season 2 also finally shows Ruth’s Nazi-hunting career in action, which makes her reconnection with “Meyer” far more layered and surprising.

Hunters Season 2 Proves Meyer Was Responsible For Ruth's Death

Hunters’ season 2 finale confirms that Ruth Heidelbaum knew Meyer Offerman was actually Wilhelm “The Wolf” Zuchs before her death. After hinting to Meyer that she knew the truth about his identity, The Wolf called the hunters’ next target Heinz Richter and informed him that Ruth was onto him. Without revealing his identity, Meyer gave him Ruth’s address and ordered the hit on her. Meyer simply sought to kill Ruth in order to cover his own tracks, which makes her death more heartbreaking considering her life could have been saved had she been able to tell her fellow hunters the truth.

While Amazon's Hunters season 2 reveal makes Ruth’s death more tragic, Jonah isn’t entirely surprised by this brutal twist. The confirmation that Meyer was responsible for Ruth’s murder primarily makes his interest in Jonah far more manipulative. The entire time that he took Jonah under his wing and spoke kindly of Ruth, Meyer had actually been the one who arranged her death. This also makes Jonah killing Meyer in Hunters’ season 1 finale more poetic, as he was unknowingly avenging the death of his grandmother.

How Ruth Knew Meyer Was Actually Wilhelm "The Wolf" Zuchs

Like grandmother, like grandson, Ruth was a keen Nazi hunter who could spot the real Wolf better than her associates. However, this is primarily because Ruth knew the real Meyer and Wolf from the concentration camps, so she could recognize the part of Meyer’s appearance that Wilhelm couldn’t fake. The giveaway for how Ruth confirmed that Meyer was actually Wilhelm was her comment about Jonah's mother Naomi having Meyer’s eyes. Wilhelm was able to get plastic surgery, make a new face, and imitate the scars that he gave to the real Meyer, but he couldn’t replicate Meyer’s eyes.

Meyer had a light about him that was seen in both Naomi and Jonah, and it’s not one that Wilhelm “The Wolf” Zuchs elicited. Hunters season 2 indicates that Ruth became convinced about Meyer’s real identity when looking at old images of The Wolf and seeing that Al Pacino’s Meyer had the same eyes as the torturous Nazi doctor. As Al Pacino's Scarface character would say in the 1983 movie, “The eyes, Chico. They never lie.” Sadly, Meyer caught onto Ruth’s knowledge before she could inform Hunters’ other Nazi trackers of the truth.
