All American: Homecoming episode 1 includes a huge tease about Damon Sims' surprise family history and a connection to another character.
Warning: SPOILERS for All American: Homecoming season 1All American: Homecoming episode 1's ending teases Damon Sims' surprise family history, which is later confirmed to be a partial truth. The CW's All American spinoff is primarily focused on continuing Simone Hicks' story after her supporting role since season 2, but Damon Sims is also a main character. Audiences first met the talented baseball prospect during All American season 3 when an episode was used as a backdoor pilot for All American: Homecoming. However, plenty of mysteries about Damon and his past remained, and this includes some information about his real parentage.
One of the biggest unanswered questions about Damon Sims that All American: Homecoming addressed is about his real parents. Damon was adopted as a child, and his adoptive mom fueled his baseball career. He didn't know who his biological parents were, but what he does know is that they went to Bringston University. This was part of the reason why he wanted to go to the college, as he hoped to find out more about his birth parents. It had been expected that Simone's All American spinoff would take its time revealing the truth about Damon's secret family history, but the truth behind the Damon Sims parentage has been revealed.
Damon Sims' Family History Explained
At the very end of All American: Homecoming episode 1, Damon's friend and fellow baseball player JR learns that Damon Sims was adopted as a child and that his parents were Bringston alumni. JR rushes back to his dorm room and pulls out a box of memorabilia. He quickly finds a photo of a baby boy inside. The child has a scar on his forehead in the same place Damon does. All American: Homecoming then replays Damon's previous line before adding a new one in from JR, confirming that his parents also went to Bringston University. In doing so, the show heavily implied that Damon and JR are actually brothers through JR's mom.
Damon Sims takes matters into his own hands in All American: Homecoming by getting a DNA test, which has troubling results. The DNA test reveals that Damon and JR are not related at all, bringing Damon back to square one on the search for his biological parents. When Damon's adoptive father is confirmed to have Alzheimer's, he is unable to give Damon the answers he wants or needs. Things only get worse when Damon finds out that the DNA test he took was false, due to JR's illness that he suffered from as a child.
JR's mother in All American: Homecoming confirms that the baby in the picture is, in fact, Damon Sims, and relays that she had an affair with Damon's adoptive father which resulted in pregnancy. JR's father and Bringston's head baseball coach Jesse in All American: Homecoming, refused to raise a child that was not his own, and therefore, he was given up. While this revelation is sad, the actual truth is even sadder. As it turns out, Damon Sims and JR are actually real brothers, and Jesse is really Damon's father. Despite having a vasectomy, Jessie got his wife pregnant and after the affair, he assumed that Damon was not his child and gave him up.
How Damon's Parentage Affects Season 2
This only further complicates Jesse and Damon Sims' relationship in All American: Homecoming season 2, as Damon leaves Bringston due to his aversion to playing for his father. Revealing that Damon and JR are brothers would be a natural way for All American: Homecoming to add some drama to the series, alongside the drama unfolding with the Damon Sims and Simone Hicks relationship. It sent JR on a twisting journey to find out if Damon is his brother while revealing the dysfunctional nature of his own parents' relationship. It also provides All American: Homecoming with a seamless way of having Damon meet his birth parents, something All American didn't want to do.
