She was born on January 11, 1972 in New York City to her parents, Penny and Charles D. Peet. Her mother was a social worker and her father a lawyer by profession. In addition to being American, she is of English, Scottish, and German descent.
At the age of seven, Peet moved to London, but would later return after four years. Amanda was educated at Friends Seminary, a Quaker school, and then at Columbia University to study history. She will graduate from university in 1994, but it was during her stay at the institution that she began to nurture her desire to become an actress. These desires led her to take acting lessons with Uta Hagen at Columbia.
Her acting career began in 1992 on an episode of The Larry Sanders Show. Her film debut was in the drama Animal Room in 1995.
After doing well with smaller roles, Amanda got her big break in 1999 when she landed the role of Jacqueline Barrett in Jack and Jill. She starred in the fantasy romantic comedy Simply Irresistible as Chris and from there the gigs kept coming back.
